Galería EXU Pays Living Tribute to Master Artist Olivia Guzmán

Within the framework of Art Week, Galería EXU opened its doors for one of the most significant and moving moments of its programming: a living tribute to Maestra Olivia Guzmán, a fundamental figure whose career has left a profound mark on art and the mentorship of new generations of creators.

From the start of the gathering, the gallery space was transformed into a place of pause, recognition, and gratitude. More than a ceremony, it was an occasion to stop and look at a life dedicated to the craft, to the material, and to the permanence of art. Paying tribute to an artist whose presence remains active, sensitive, and vital was, undoubtedly, a privilege shared among colleagues, cultural community members, and the public close to her trajectory.

Olivia Guzmán’s artistic story began in 1976, initially through painting, oils, and watercolors. However, her path soon found its own voice in the exploration of matter and the expressive power of sculpture. Over the years, her work has transitioned through materials such as ceramics, wood, clay, cement, resin, marble, and bronze—always guided by a practice marked by patience, discipline, and exceptional sensitivity.

In her work, there is no haste; there is listening. There is no imposition upon the material, but rather a constant dialogue with it. This relationship is clearly perceived in her sculptures, where the body is not merely represented but evoked as presence, gesture, and memory. Her pieces seem to hold a silent breath, a living tension between stillness and movement, between form and the human experience that inhabits it.

Across more than four decades, Olivia Guzmán’s work has been exhibited, recognized, and collected in diverse spaces, standing as a testament to a solid and coherent practice. But perhaps one of the most admirable aspects of her career is the fidelity with which she has sustained her work: pieces created with her own hands, from initial conception to the final details, with a total commitment that is increasingly rare today.

This tribute also served to highlight something essential: art is not created in solitude. Maestra Olivia Guzmán’s trajectory has been possible thanks to a network of support and care that deserves to be named—from the workers in her studio, who have been an integral part of her processes, to the close support of her husband and the shared labor that made it possible to sustain both the studio and the time for creation. Recognizing these presences is not a secondary gesture, but an act of justice.

In addition to her body of work, Maestra Olivia has left a deep mark on teaching. Her way of mentoring other artists has been based on listening, respect for the process, and an understanding of the inherent rhythm of both the body and the material. Because of this, her legacy transcends her physical pieces and extends to the experiences of those who learned alongside her.

At Galería EXU, this tribute was not understood as a closing, but as an affirmation of the present. It was a way of saying that her work is still alive, her teachings continue to grow, and her presence remains fundamental for thinking about art through the lenses of coherence, craftsmanship, and permanence.

We deeply thank Maestra Olivia Guzmán for allowing us to share this moment, as well as all the people who made this encounter possible. Her life and work remind us that art, when born of true practice, does not only endure: it also accompanies, shapes, and transforms.
